He said: you won't listen now, children never do, but I offer the advice because it's true:
Learn to play the piano when you're young, if you don't you will always wish you had (I didn't, I do)
Do something you love for your job
Start a pension when you're young
You might change your mind about religion and socialism, you might not of course
Don't drink every day (I think he meant alchohol)
Learn Chinese

That's all very good advice.
I was always too afraid to do something I loved for my job. I am trying to make up for it now, and I have never been as happy as I am now.
Hi MM- yes indeed, he's a very good Dad! No I didn't either really- often it comes down to financial decisions doesn't it- and just life- still I think of the tortoise and the hare- am sure we will get there!
I love the don't drink everyday advice! :) Good one.
Hi Ines- yes, not always followed but very sensible there's no doubt
I completely agree. :)
Honestly. Why don't we listen? I might play the 'opposites' game if and when I breed!
All very good advice - where was he when I was growing up? xx
Lots of good advice here! I wish I had learnt chinese, or any other language - I limp along with French, and that's about it. One of my Nan's favourite sayings was 'keep your nose tidy on Friday's' - not quite sure what she meant by that to be honest, or why noses could be untidy all other days of the week! So not sure if that really is great advice to be honest! But she did say look after your teeth. That one I understand!
My mum told me to stick with the Italian lessons, I didn't and I really regret it now!
You have a very wise dad!
Hi Caroline, No- yes some reverse psychology is probably the thing- it must be hard though!
Hi Helena- he was there when I was growing up and I still didn't really listen. The folly of youth and all that.
Hi Jayne- no am not sure about the nose but agree about teeth- very sound advice
Hi Cherryblossom- I'm not a linguist and wish i was, we always want to do what we can't. I can bumble in French in a holiday way but I couldn't work there and as for Chinese- I can't even say my 1-10. Still you as young as you feel and all that.
It's so true: all children need guidance. My father said, 'don't get caught'.
Not enormously inspiring. LLGxx
Top advice Rose...Have you taken it??....He sounds very wise, so I do hope so...xv
This is so sweet- and very good advice. Very true about the piano. I learned when I was a little girl then when I went to university I stopped playing. Recently picked it up again and it is like riding a bike- because I learned so young, I never forgot! xo
Hi LLG- good advice of sorts though!
Hi Vicki- I have taken quite a lot of his advice but on most of those no I'm afraid- which is why they were in my head. Mostly just to do what's best for me which I have always tried to do
Hi Daily- ah thanks- that's very interesting- children are like spinges. I did learn musical instruments and sing- but I have all but forgotten everything- I can still pitch a tune but I couldn't write music. You should definitely the little bump playing at an early age!
All sound advice, but I'm not too sure about starting a pension or the alchohol tip...!
Lovely post.... the piano advice is the best one, i think. i stopped playing for years and years, but took it up again more recently and am so glad i did. a friend of mine only started playing at 23 or so and is really getting good, it's never too late to take it up you know!

Hi William- I have failed on them all really but those two especially... ;-)
Hi Jane- now this is encouraging- perhaps I need to try and find the time- and the teacher- it's never too late in life, or so they say- I will do some googling! thanks
I should have met your father. Pity!
Hi Mystica- thanks for stopping by- ah well I wish I had listened a bit more! Still I try now that I am older!
