Trashy sun holiday book recommendations please!

As discussed below I very unorganised and am off on holiday in under 2 days without having really bought any of the necesseties: swimsuits, towels, suncream, trashy or non trashy books, half of Boots pharmacy etc.

I am relying on the duty free book shops to supply me with enough glorious reading material for a week as I have got through most of what is at home.

So the big question is what you recommend for a sun holiday? This is not the occasion for anything War and Peace like obviously but otherwise I am open to any ideas.

Any suggestions will be very gratefully received.

This was a nice light read and I rather loved it: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, very charming. And not trashy but just wonderful The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. And try anything Jasper Fforde.

Hi Jena
Great thanks very much for your picks. I read good things about Guernsey when it came out and haven't managed to read it yet- I think it would be nice holiday fair too.

I love Stardust so the Neil Gaiman is probably an excellent idea. I don't know Jasper but what a fantastic name.

They are all on the list to hunt for in the duty free shop (the book shops round me close long before I leave work!)

Thank you! x

Am thinking about it Rose...I think I am thinking more about your holiday in the sun!
Have you read Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk - one of my all time favourite reads? You might need to get it at Waterstone's before you leave, xv.

Jasper Fforde = ffun. :) As for Jen's other two picks {waves at Jena}, I haven't read them, but they are on my "to read" list.

Of course, that's a mighty long list....

Frequently I go for non-heavy historical fiction when out in the sun. Somehow, it fits just right--enough substance that I don't get frustrated, enough frittering that I don't have to work too hard. The Princes of Ireland series, Mary Stewarts, that kind of stuff. There was one about fin de siecle Vienna that was a fictional historical mystery...will scare that up...

(...) I just went to the book collection to find other titles, and then realized that one of the things I enjoy about selecting vacation reading is playing the game of finding something at the airport/local bookstore. Sometimes you are forced to go off your game...and that can be fun. So can the "oh, I guess I'll have to just get this trash".... ;)

...oh, yeah; I generally don't read historical fiction any other time. Guess it's a ritual...helps designate "vacation."

Plus, if I'm going to have a central location for the duration, I like to get a bunch o' magazines for home base.

Hi Vicki, I am totally distracted thinking about my holiday when in fact I have lots to do before I go!

I will do my best to get to Waterstone's and if I don't manage this is definitely going on the to read list for when I'm back. All time favourite reads always interest me.

Hi Scentscelf, that's very true sometimes you do come across a gem or dare yourself to read something different when in duty free.

I am going to have to get to the airport super early as I need to do book shopping and then the all important duty free perfume hunting!!
