As heard on the south bank on Friday evening:

Girl 1: but I don’t feel I’ve achieved anything in my life, you’ve done so much, you do so many things, go to so many places, I never do anything

Girl 2: but you have a boyfriend so none of that matters

Girl 3 (me): sad face

oh, that's sad...for both of them! How old were they (please say under 25!)

Oh dear. That's so wrong on so many levels. What ever happened to emancipation???

Hi Marion- They were definitely under thirty but I would say more like 27-28.

Hi MM- it was partly the way it was said. They both looked like nice, normal, fun girls- like my friends and I!! I don't think any of my circle would ever say such a thing- though of late I have noticed a bit more of what I think it called new Victorianism creeping back in. To each their own but I just felt sad the girl's self esteem was wrapped up in who she dated- or didn't.
